Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postboxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Police say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they reported.
Officers then located many other marked automobiles and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Police state initial examinations suggest the liquid was probably human blood.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; officials are presently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the residents for details.
An important political figure commented the incident made him without words and needed to be addressed quickly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the death of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
