Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
