Sheff Wed Deals with a 'Significant Problem', States New Football Authority

'We will play a key role in football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

Sheffield Wednesday's ongoing struggles represent a a "major concern" and the new football authority is looking to gain the ability to look into club affairs in comparable cases, the newly appointed chairman the official has stated.

In a wide-ranging interview, the chairman, who was named to the position this week, showed understanding towards Wednesday's fanbase.

The chairman convened with four supporter groups representing the Championship side recently.

The football club have been facing challenges both on and off the pitch in 2025, with the club delaying salary disbursements on several different times, including in the autumn.

"Evidently Wednesday represents a significant problem for EFL and a significant problem for football," the chairman stated.

"The club represents one of the historic institutions for the English game and recently we have met supporters' organizations.

"We're now looking to get powers... which will enable us to take the club and similar situations submitted for our review if they need to be investigated and addressed."

Financial Struggles and Leadership Concerns

The club's controversial proprietor Dejphon Chansiri stated during the off-season he would be prepared to relinquish control at their home ground, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with interested parties.

Failure to pay player wages on time in earlier this year resulted in restrictions being imposed by the league officials in mid-year, preventing the club from carrying out any player acquisitions for the following recruitment periods, although that restriction was lifted in August.

Official's Viewpoint

The chairman stated: "The job [of the regulator] is there for the supporters of Wednesday, other clubs in similar situations where people are committed to a community organization that has represented their community in multiple situations.

"I fully appreciate the club's situation, as I do for every team that since 1992 have gone to the wall, or been close to going to the wall, for factors unrelated to the fans themselves."

Inquired if the regulator could force an chairman to relinquish a club if they are judged inappropriate, the chairman responded: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the response would be once we gather the evidence and know what's going on, we will."

But the regulator clarified that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the regulator would prefer to collaborate with owners.

"The last thing what we want to do is begin intervening in an individual club, an specific proprietor, without being in a position to cooperate with that proprietor to address the issues that the club's facing and the chairman's encountering," the chairman stated.

"However, realistically, when you review the record of the game, over the recent generations there have been some owners, few in number, but some who have been irresponsible in the way which they've been managing their teams and eventually don't wish to take responsibility for the coming years."

'Errors may undo substantial development'

The regulator engaged representatives from 110 clubs to detail the scope of the regulator on Wednesday and insisted it was a "forward-thinking discussion" with a "significant participation" from the National League to the Premier League.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because should mistakes occur, if the sport makes errors, the extraordinary progress that's been made might evaporate swiftly," the regulator warned.

"This represents everyone's worst fear in the realm of domestic football is a huge success story - we must maintain momentum.

"Substantial financial resources entering the sport and has been channeled for the past two decades, because there's no guarantee it will continue to come into football, which is one of the reasons why I think we have to adopt a precise perspective on risk and of course, of the coming seasons."

Elite Division Worries

The Premier League opposed the establishment of an oversight body because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the elite division's competitive balance, but the regulator stated: "I completely endorse the achievement and development as an financial organization of the top division.

"Being fully aware of the worry about compromising the top flight as an elite competition of this country. But simultaneously, if you talk to the Premier League after this week's discussion, they would have had a high level of reassurance -and, actually, they have been telling us in private they have a high level of reassurance."

Ideological Links

The chairman continues to confront a "thorough examination" by the Commissioner for Public Appointments after he revealed he contributed money to the opposition group in 2020.

The 68-year-old provided financial support for government minister Lisa Nandy's leadership campaign, along with that of the current Prime Minister.

"I've been completely open about my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that party membership ceased the day the select committee approved my appointment," the regulator explained.

"I currently have no participation in any type of partisan engagement."
