Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, saying his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced two fatalities: one from drowning on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives with another 135 missing before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has risen doubled over the last two decades.

International estimates suggest that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
