2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' underwhelming initial reveal last autumn.
On Wednesday, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this strategic move through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the necessity for a more defined game identity.
Ismailer expressed that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to better meet gamer demands.
The news follows a similar move taken by the publisher in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full content from Ismailer's memo:
Team—
I understand you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I shared you all a message, I stated the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and innovative creators we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re excited for that partnership to continue.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It revealed the requirement for a more distinct brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to fulfill its promise to our players.
Our confidence in Project ETHOS grows every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Director of 31st Union. Following some time of conversations, he comes aboard us on next week.
His guidance and expertise in the competitive gaming space is extensive, having dedicated the recent years producing and managing some of the most recognizable series in gaming, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.
Let’s together in receiving Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to persist observing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to ahead.
David
Brinkman currently serves in the position of senior developer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for Apex Legends. He earlier was employed at Treyarch and Activision in multiple development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, before that, had stints at other industry leaders.
The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a early access event. Initially, the developers portrayed the game as a "no-cost, third-person perspective action-packed experience and an exciting advancement on the genre."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Build your hero in real-time to match your preferred approach," the description explains. "Challenge the rivals with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that shift every match. Will you safely extract with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and trust your group can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."
The game lacks an announced debut schedule or platforms, but players can look forward to additional details as creation continues.
